Shopping Round Up 10-26-2009

Shopping went well this week.  Kroger had some sales that coincided with a few coupons I had.  I like it when that happens.  Instead of taking pictures according to where the items are purchased, I’m now going to group them by what will be used to make this weeks menu and what is going into the pantry for future meals. I had an email asking how to build up your pantry and thought this would help a little.

Items to complete this weeks menu.

October looks good.  I came in under my $50 goal.  I’m sure November will be much harder with Thanksgiving.  The good thing is I have a freezer full of meat, I probably can get through the month without having to buy much, meat wise.

How is everyone else going to fit Thanksgiving into their budget?

Angel Food

lo mein

Yesterday I picked up the Angel Food that we are going to try.  The basic box is supposed to feed a family of four for a week.  There are only 2 of us so we should probably get a few more meals out of it.  I’m going to keep track of that and the quality to see if we are getting a good deal.  The quality looks ok and I like that the majority of the food came from the US, only the spaghetti came from Mexico.  Pictured above is the Chicken Stir-Fry Skillet Meal.   This was a frozen meal that came in three parts, chicken, veggie and noodles and sauce pack.  This was okay, not something I would normally buy but it had a good taste and only took about 15 minutes to make.

This is what was in this month’s Standard Box which cost $30.

1.5 lbs New York strips (3 x 8oz.)
1 lb. Steak Fajita Strips
2 lb. Chicken Stir Fry Skillet Meal
1 lb. Lean Ground Beef
1.5 Breaded White Meat Chicken Tenders
1 lb. Center Cut Ham Steak
1 lb. Bake or Fry Fish Sticks
1 lb. Pasta
25 oz. Marinara Sauce
1 lb. Frozen Baby Lima Beans
1 lb. Frozen Mixed Vegetables
2 lb. Bag Fresh Apples
10 ct. Flour Tortillas
32 oz. 2% Shelf Stable Milk
1 Dozen Eggs
1 Dessert  (This month was a 24 pc Nestle Toll House refrigerated cookie dough)

Check back during the month to see how I work these into my meal plan and my review of the quality.

I meant to post several recipes to my recipe site but haven’t gotten around to it.  My pictures, which at their best aren’t that great are even worse now that it’s getting darker earlier and was overcast all week.  I only have one  big window in the kitchen that faces South, so I’m limited on natural light.

I got a big bottle of wine on clearance at Wal-Mart a few weeks ago, so that helped the cost of this dish.  I still have enough left over to try a pork dish that has caught my eye.  This is a great dish for a chilly day, the recipe can be found here.

Menu Plan Monday 10-19-2009

This is a busy week.  Cooking class, Broadway On The Road’s production of Mama Mia and three days of making pumpkin rolls for our County Home-Extension’s yearly fundraiser.  I’ve planned easy meals that I can do ahead and just finish up when I get home.  I want to try Angel Food out and see how it goes, but that will need to be paid for this week.  I’ll need to rely a lot on my pantry to keep costs down as the Angel Food is $30.

Check back tomorrow to see how shopping went and for more great menu plans go here.

Mon  – Chicken noodle casserole and broccoli.  This is moved from last Saturday.
Tue – Leftover Enchiladas and cumin rice
Wed – Leftover Chicken noodle casserole
Thur – Chicken and wild rice chowder and corn bread bites.

Sat – Chicken Stir-fry and rice

Yeah!  I came in under buget with $9.86 to spare.  I would have done better if I had planned dinners without all the mushrooms, since they weren’t on sale this week.  Buying mushrooms is almost like buying meat.  I hoping this week’s leftovers will make up a lot of next week’s meals, since I’ve got a busy week.  I’m also hoping next week’s cost are small so I can fit in an Angel Food package.  The church near us does Angel Food and I was going to give it a try to see if it could bring our monthly cost down.  Has anyone tried Angel Food?  What do you think?
